How to Optimize with Slugs?

If you're new here, you may want to browse my articles and if you like them please subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

This is a little tip that will further improve you URL for search engines and is an add on to yesterdays post, if you want get more out of search engines than a post slug is the way to go.If you use wordpress and you have optimized your URL according to Optimize you permalink structure for search engines you will find that your URL will include the full title of the post and this will be not fully optimized for the search engines.

Generally we write our post titles for your readers in mind and not search engines so a catchy title is key, When it comes to the permalink its not the case, we need to adjust it to suit the search engines rather than the readers.

By using the slug box which we can find in the text editor located in the right column, we can here manually adjust the end of the permalink to suit the search engine. Here you can use keywords and reduce and remove all the “the, and, or “and other words not used in keyword searches.

When making your slug focus on a few keywords that will be used on popular search engine queries and of course the lesser keywords the higher there value.

By using Optimize you permalink structure for search engines and now this post you have greatly improved chance on being found in search engine queries

By using Optiumzation tips for both Permalinks and slugs you will see the improvement.

      Great tutorial.
Can you also maybe implement a padding on the left side.
Your text is almost outside of my screen. It really will improve the user experience.

      Keep up the good work.

I agree with D&G as above. Because of the padding 0 on left side I decide to not strain my eyes by reading it. Anyway, I know what you mean even without reading the whole post. Then… my question is that, did you apply it and give you new post custom slugs?

I feel really happy to see such quick change and prompt response to comments. Yes Thumb-up for your wonderful post and support. And Yes, I noticed you used slug right after I posted the first comment, but it was too late to change anything. I wish WordPress could give us a 120s countdown like digg does, to modify our comments.

      Hi Simon,

interesting topic about the slug. The title’s quite catchy, and who would have expected the slug means the slug in wordpress. Quite a nice twist.
