We all know when we see a blog with no or little comments we normally read and move on and never spend much time looking at the content. Which at times i can be guilty as i judge a sites quality and reputation based on comments and other factors.
Since i switched over to Wordpress i have found a huge improvement to the number of comments i receive on my blog with an improvement of approx 400% over the last few weeks and i contribute this to the excellent number and variety of plugins available.
The plugins vary in use with applications to fight spam, showing recent comments and more. I have made a list of the plugins that i currently use and a few that i worth a mention too.
Pluggins on my blog:
Summed up by Darren Rowse who says “The biggest single time saver in my blogging is a plugin that many of us take for granted - but which has literally saved me days and days of time.” Darren had recieved his 2,000,000 blocked spam which speaks wonders for the power of this plugin. You are required to use the API key you can find out more on their homepage.
Developed to send an e-mail message to users who comment on your website who have never commented before. The message dispatched to the user is defined within the plugin’s preferences. Numerous tags have been integrated to allow for information to be included in the message easily (I.E.: timestamp, author name, comment, ETC.). A good way to touch base with any new readers who have just commented for the first time.
Using this plugin allows you to display the recent comment by your readers in the sidebar, this informs readers and alike of the hot topics within your blog and can give a link to back to there page.
Main and only function is to preview yor comment before pressing the submit button.
MyAvatars, a plugin that shows MyBlogLog’s avatars in your comments, and it brightens up the dull comments page too.
Encourage more discussion from your readers, by displaying their names (linked to their website if desired) and number of comments they have made recently to your sidebar. this pluginhas caused many a battle between readers aiming for the top spot, which only generates positive benefits to the blogger. Many a contest is done using this feature ranging from cash or blog reviews.
Subscribe to Comments is a plugin that allows on your blog to check a box before commenting and get e-mail notification of further comments. It is one of the most popular WordPress plugins out there for the simple reason that it helps foster a community around your blog by encouraging commenters to come back and stay engaged in the dialog.
This ends my current list of plugin’s that i currently use and there’s many more out there, heres a couple that you could look at:
This plugin for Wordpress asks the visitor making the comment to answer a simple math question. This is intended to prove that the visitor is a human being and not a spam robot. Currently not added this yet, but will consider in the future.
Edit Comments plugin that allows commentators to edit their own comments. To edit a comment, a user must have the same IP address as the user that made the comment and they must also make the edit within a specific time frame. The default edit time window is 30 minutes, but it can be changed easily in the plugin’s option page. This will save the blushes from a typo or wrong comment to a post.

I know you already have it, but I consider Do Follow an important comment plugin.
