First started with the letter boxes being filled with junk mail and then when the computer age arrived and especially the e-mail era, it got worse. Nowadays it’s just too easy to send spam and you can do it from your arm chair.

Why Is Wordpress Spam a Problem?

Basically it wastes our time, most bloggers hold down a regular job and with blogging it does not eave mush time to do any thing else so we don’t want the hassle of spending a hour a day going though e-mails or approving comment when we can be doing other tasks. A great example is Darren of Problogger who received his 2,000,000 spam which was caught with akismet. When he worked out the time it would of took to clear all these spasm it came to some serious time in fact 1.5months no stop 24/7 to clear them.

Wordpress Standard spam Fighting Features

Wordpress has tried to arrest this problem by adding some standard built in features to help solve the issue of spam.

1. Comment Moderation

When adding a comment to a post a common feature in spam is a link, as this is what a spammer will use to get you go back to there site. Genuine comments normally don’t have a link within so you can normally tell the difference between the two.

Too help you do this you can turn all comments with a link within them too be sent for moderation. To do this follow the instructions:

Go to the Options > Discussion panel.
Scroll down to Comment Moderation. Change the value to 1

So now the slightest link will be held back.

2. Spam Words

You can add words you don’t like see on your site like Viagra etc which will be black listed, so any comments will be pushed to moderation..

3.Moderate All Comments

This is an easier way to ensure no spam, it work on a small blog if you have limited commentators, but if you’re popular then you will need to switch this off. This can be bad as a visitor will like to see his comment added instantly and they may not want come back to see if you approved this comment when you wake up.

4.Disabling comments completely

Very simply put NO spam!!

Good tips. Another tip would be having your users register, before they could comment. Not the best option. But it’s still one of the many ways to combat spam.

Spam is pretty sick .. Particularly spam on orkut is pretty lame .. I have a blog post regarding orkut spam.. Just imagine how bugged and out of ideas i must’ve been to write a post like that .. Pretty lame of me ..

Also there was this blog post i read recently about how you could use spam headlines to help you learn to create attractive post titles. Ever noticed how the spam mails are so good at drawing attention , even if for just a few seconds …
