Optimize your Permalink Structure for Search Engine
If you're new here, you may want to browse my articles and if you like them please subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Optimizing your permalinks has two benefits and is important to do from the start for two reasons:
1. It’s easy to read and will attract more readers and
2. It’s very difficult to do afterwards
When you optimize your permalink normally it will be a word of phrase to show the contents of the article where as the default permalinks look something like this:
http://yeepage.com/ ?p=100
An optimized Permalink will look like this:
http://www.yeepage.com/mistakes-to-avoid-when-blogging
Why we need to change our permalinks?
By using this optimized type of permalink we create a more user friendly link for the search engines to use and search engines will give a higher power to keywords within our permalinks.
How to change the default setting to the custom URL which is friendly with search engines.
- Go into control panel
- Click Options
- Now click on Permalinks.
- Now look for custom field and add the text /%postname% into the blank box
- Click “update permalink structure” at lower right corner
- Job done

Hello there, I believe the text should only be “%postname%” without the “/” otherwise, the permalink would look like “http://mysite.com//postname”
I use mine with the ‘/’ and it works fine, I have not tried removing it.
actually, it’s me who had a problem
i’m hosted by netfirms and the pretty urls are not supported. luckily i was able to manage the workaround through the help of 2 wordpress plugins. i have documented it on a post on my blog. sorry to cause confusion on your part.
On a related note .. Have you considered cloaking your affiliate links .. I’ve heard thats a pretty neat trick ..
Instead of having http://www.productname.com/refid =XXXXXXXX ?
You can cloak your links to http://www.yourdomainname.com/productname.php or something like that …
This is pretty much like a link redirect i suppose, and i guess there is a wp plugin for link cloaking ..
Just thought i would put this here on a post related to link handling ..
Great going …
