Internal Linking can Increase Traffic and SEO

One of the easiest methods to increase your traffic and boost your search engine optimization can be done from within your own blog. This can be simply done by linking internally to our previous article.

Just think if we link our previous articles back too our latest post, by doing this we have created the opportunity for your readers to first click on that link and follow to another page and hence increase your pages viewed, but at same time they will go deeper into our site and increase chances of becoming a loyal reader or RSS feed reader.

Secondly, a page within a site is considered more important than other pages not only based on how many inbound links are pointing to that particular page, but also on how often it is linked from within the site itself.

What the search engine is being told is that the page you linked too is worthy of the mention and is considered important. An example of how you could link to other pages, my intro to this post could of started like

“I was looking back at my previous post on Outward Bound linking and realized that I had not mentioned about internal links which was poor planning and time management by myself. So today I will talk about….”

Instantly I have created 2 back links too my site within the first paragraph and with some planning and cross over of topics I can add 3 maybe 4 more.

Ways to link internally

The easiest way to have some basic internal links for all your posts is to create a sitemap, theres two types a site map for visitors (HTML) or for search engines (XML), too be honest on my site i am having difficulties with installing both site maps due to widget issues.

If you went down to the end of this post or any post for that matter, you will see a list of most popular posts and related posts, these can be created by two widgets which will display them automatically below all posts.

At the end of every month, I always make a list of my best posts for that particular month. This works for two reasons if any new readers arrive at this monthly update they will see my best work and at same time I am telling search engines too of these great posts. An example from my October post:

My other posts worthy of a mention from my archives for October are:

  1. 6 Important Webmaster Tools
  2. Regaining your Passion for your Blog
  3. StumbleUpon - Simple tips to increased traffic and the sequel Stumbleupon: My story so far…
  4. Give your Blog a Check Up
  5. Decluttering my Blog

Don´t forget outbound links

Now, that you will start to link internally within your blog you must remember too add some outward bound links too to share some love links with others as these love links will come back too you too. Two examples would be my Weekend love links or my definitive list of stumbleupon articles which both have heavy outward bound links.

So now you can see how easy it is to have internal links within your articles, you can see that I managed 12 within this post which is a little over board but it’s purely for illustration purposes only, but you can understand that by using internal links and of course some external links you will improve your traffic and Search Engine Optimization too.
