After you have decided to start your website, one of the first things you need to do is choose your domain name, sounds simple right? There’s a lot of thought that needed when choosing the domain name.
All your choices will affect your search engine ranking, popularity and your visitors. A domain name can make or break your site and is the first thing that your visitor or potential buyer will see.
When you are choosing your domain name consider these few questions first.
Is your domain name related to you product or company?
This the most straight forward choice for your domain name, by using your product or your company name will instantly relate to your website. For example a company called dolphin scuba may consider dolphinscuba.com, but also consider this, a keyword rich title like scuba.com will help move your site higher up the search engine rankings. Therefore a simple redirect from scuba.com to dolphinscuba.com will increase your visitors hugely.
Is it pronounceable? Only has one spelling?
There’s no point having a long domain name which is unpronounceable to your visitor’s , remember your visitor may be from another country, so having a simple domain name which is short is very important.
Ensure that it does not have more than one spelling, for example theatre.com or theater.com both are correct spelling in their respective countries, remember every incorrect spelling of a domain name is a lost visitor. Webmasters will buy a popular miss spelling of a domain or a name deliberately as they know there’s potential for large traffic.
Is it easy to remember?
This is a little like the one above, keep it simple, you notice nowadays that a lot of companies brand their company with initials, Kentucky fried Chicken now use KFC as its simple and easy remember, like wise for your website do the same a short URL is important and abbreviate your company name if necessary.
Is your domain name unique?
There’s no point having a domain name which is very close to another site, your site must be unique enough to not be mixed up with another site. Do some research on website names that are close to your proposed domain name.
But of course there is always exceptions to the above questions you need to ask yourself before you choose your domain name, just look at Google, Yahoo, Ebay from the name along you have any idea what their content is?
This type of sites the URL has become their brand, the URL is actually bigger than the website and its content.
You might be asking then why I choose Yeepage.com?
Reflecting on it I should have gone for a name more related to my niche but since young it’s a name that stuck with me… A friend once called me “Yeepage” and the names just stuck around in my head, but until today I have no idea what or why he called me it. So from this was created the “Yeepage Journal”
So I guess I fall into the Yahoo and Google’s of this world, so watch out for the Yeepage Brand in the coming years

I own 560 domains in my niche. I know…a little bit obsessive…LOL. I think having keywords in the url helps the visitor know what your site or blog is about. And…indirectly I think it’s a little plus with google (just a little).
